Picture it, Sterling Heights, MI, fall of 2013. After being strongly encouraged by my doctor (for months and months) to incorporate more cardio into my life, I finally decided to explore my options. I had tried running before and hated it. My mind would get bored, and all I could think was, "I absolutely hate this, and why is time going so slow!" That thought really applied to all of the stationary cardio machines at the gym that I tried. Now there just so happened to be a small fitness studio near my house that offered Zumba classes, and I finally got the courage to walk in and give it a try. At the time I was not leading a very healthy lifestyle, mostly because of the fact that I was a smoker and had been on and off with for 15 years. Needless to say, my first Zumba class was um... challenging. I actually had to take 3 5 minute breaksduring that hour long class. I went to the instructor after class and told her that I had fun, but "boy do I suck at this!" She said something which I will never forget, "You don't suck, because you kept coming back." Seeing the progress I've made with my health and fitness level since that day has shown me a very valuable lesson about why I enjoy Zumba so much, of course besides the fact that I love to dance. As cliche as it sounds, Zumba really is for everybody, you just need to tailor it to fit your needs. A good instructor will help you do that and still encourage you to push yourself to your own personal, healthy limit, so that you continue to make progess. This is the kind of instructor I strive to be, one that can give back the gift I was given when I attended that first class back in 2013. Because of Zumba, I haven't smoked in over a year, and I feel better than I ever have before, both physically and mentally. I never would have guessed that I'd be here teaching Zumba today, but I am so grateful that I am. I hope my story inspires you to give it a try.
